The name comes from the early timber industry of the district, when logs cut in the surrounding forests were launched into the river here to float downstream to sawmills in Melbourne. The Yarra River corridor through town is popular for fishing and picnics, and the surrounding hills carry orchards and some of the smaller wineries of the southern Yarra Valley. Launching Place recorded a population of around 2,500 at the last census, and remains a popular stop for Rail Trail cyclists riding the full route between Lilydale and Warburton.
